The path to true digital confidence and smarter EdTech implementation
There is a growing narrative echoing through modern education that we’ve gone too far with technology. It is an easy argument to make, and one that wins plenty of clicks.
Critics point to slipping global test scores over the last two decades, matching the timeline perfectly with the rise of the smartphone. They see students struggling with screen addiction and mental health, and their immediate reaction is to look back nostalgically to a time of purely ink, paper and textbooks.
But blaming “EdTech” for our broader cultural struggles with screens is a dangerous oversimplification. According to a recent GESS Education article by NetSupport’s CEO (developer of classroom.cloud), Al Kingsley MBE, retreating into the past actively harms our students’ futures.
The real issue
The truth isn’t that the technology fails; it’s that poor implementation causes distractions. When used purposefully, digital tools have consistently driven long-term gains in core subjects like literacy and numeracy.
